Hamlet of Sodom

Picture
Sodom was named by Samuel Morehouse who came to this place in 1800 and lived on the corner of Sodom Cross Road and Peaceful Valley Road.

He named it Sodom Corners because he had lived at a place with the same name in Fredericksburg (now known as Patterson) New York in Putnam County, where he was also born in 1764.

Sodom Post Office

A post master could have an office in her home, so there were several locations depending on who was postmaster at the time. A rural delivery out of the North Creek Post Office was started about 1934 – 1935. There was a Post Office in Sodom, which opened March 5, 1896 with Mary Morehouse as postmaster. The year of its closing is unknown.

Sodom Community Church

Picture
The Sodom Union Church, also near the crossroads. The church was dedicated July 11, 1895 at a service conducted by the Rev. Jay Somerville of Kansas, a former townsman. Assisting him were Rev J J Davison of Bakers Mills, Rev W Taylor of Johnsburg, and Rev Goodwin of North Creek.

July of 1944, Daisy Dalaba reopened the building, which had stood vacant for many years and held Sunday School there. Later, Daisy married Earl Allen and licensed to preach reopened it as the Sodom Community Church on April 15, 1951.

Since that time, the church has undergone numerous repairs.  Upon Rev Daisy's passing on May 24, 1999, Rev Ronald Allen has taken over the weekly services which are continued to be held for the community.

Ross Lake / Windover Lake

Picture
Ross Lake was named after the family of Hiram Ross, an early settler in Sodom.  His grandson, Taylor Ross, built the dam which created the lake.

In 1928, William Hudnut purchased his first piece of property on the lake and it was renamed "Windover".

Windover Lake is privately owned. Baker Brook is located on the northwest corner of the property.

Sodom School

Picture
The Sodom school district was formed April 28, 1819.  By 1820 there was a school house, which appears to have been the present stone building, but proof that it was the cut stone building standing today was never found.

This school was closed in 1952 with Mrs Nellie Twaits as the last teacher.

For several years the building was owned by the Johnsburg Fish and Game Club.

The present owner put the date on the schoolhouse.

It is located at the junction of the Peaceful Valley and Sodom roads.

Cheese Factory Foundation

Picture
At one time there was a cheese factory on Peaceful Valley Road, next to the Isaac Morehouse cemetery.  Its last owner was William "Billy" Baker.
